Mambulao town in CamNorte in deep health crisis after 18 local factory workers hit by virus

THE town of Mambulao in Camarines Norte has been plunged into a deep health crisis after 18 workers at a factory on the town’s outskirts were hit by the Covid-19 virus.

Most of the infected workers are living with their families in Mambulao two kilometers away from the factory.

They are now in an isolation facility within the company premises, monitored by the Municipal Health Office staff.

Contact tracing is now being carried out to find out the persons who had the last contact with those infected.

The company, Magnakron Oleo Philippines, Inc., which has a coconut processing factory, has been placed under critical zone and granular lockdown.

The company is in Baranggay Osmenia about two kilometers away from the town proper.

Mayor Ariel M. Non has earlier slammed the management of the Magnakron for violating health protocols that have been imposed since the pandemic hit the town.

He accused the company management of not reporting the status of their swab test results to the Municipal Health Office (MHO), which deals with the pandemic.

The presence of the infected workers was first revealed by the Department of Health Bicol CHD in its regular daily report on Wednesday, August 18

At first, the DOH initially reported eight new positive cases in RT-PCR (swab) test in Mambulao. Of these, seven are workers in a company later identified as Magnakron Oleo Phils, Inc.

In an executive order dated August 19, Non ordered the lockdown of the entire factory, preventing workers from coming out of the factory premises and those that are coming in unless they met the required health clearance.

The mayor mobilized the local government’s resources and tapped the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, MHO, and the local unit of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to help prevent the virus from spreading into town.

Likewise, Non has ordered the setting up of a zoning containment strategy kiosk outside the perimeters of the factory.

Manned by the MHO, MDRRMO, MHO, and the PNP, the strategy kiosk will monitor the entry and exit of all individuals in the declared critical zone.

The company lockdown will last for two weeks starting yesterday unless an extension is called for to be appraised by the task force Covid-19 of the local government.

“I immediately ordered the granular lockdown to protect the community from the rise in recent cases coming from the factory,” Non said.

However, he allowed the factory to continue with its operations and usual day-to-day activities.

The mayor said no one may go out of, or enter the company premises without the negative result of the antigen RT-PCR (swab) test.

Mambolenos who were monitoring the Facebook postings of the mayor updating on the fresh Covid-19 cases expressed “shock” and “caution” in their comments.

Several of them had urged the community to obey the health protocols to help prevent the spread of the virus.
